Maa Skandamata is worshiped on the fifth day of Navratri. Skanda refers to ‘Kumar Karthikeya’ and Mata means ‘Mother’, so the meaning of her name is the mother of Skanda. Lord Skanda is also known as ‘Kumar Karthikeya’. In ancient times, when Devtas and Asuras war took place, Lord Skanda was made the commander of the Devtas army due to his valour. The mother of Lord Skanda who was the commander of Devtas army in the Devasur Sangram (battle), the fifth form of Mother Durga is known as Maa Skandamata. Goddess opens the doors of salvation and fulfils all wishes of her devotees. Maa Skandamata who lives in mountains is very influential. It is believed with the blessings of Maa Skandamata, childless couples can conceive a child and thus fulfil their biggest desire.

Appearance of Maa skandamata

Skandamata has four arms. She has one arm raised up to bless the devotees and with one hand she holds her six face son Kumar Skanda sitting on her lap. She holds two lotus flowers in her other two arms. Maa Skandamata sits on a lotus seat, hence she is also called Padmasana and lion is her vehicle.

Significance of worshipping maa skandamata

Our ancient scriptures mention in great detail about the significance of pooja on the fifth day of Navratri. The mind and soul should completely be immersed in the Maa Skandamata and be devoid of all worldly bonds. Mata Skandamata abodes the Vishuddha Chakra also known as the Throat Chakra. Mata Skandamata is the mother of Lord Kartikeya (also called Skanda and Murugan). Also, known as the goddess of fire, Mata Skandamata rides a loin and is represented with six-headed infant Lord Skanda on her lap. Maa skandamata Katha

There lived a demon named Tarakasura who was vicious and harmed both people and the Devtas. It was impossible for the Devtas to kill Tarakasura as due to a Vardana he received, his end was possible only by the hands of Lord Shiva’s son. Thus, to help her devotees, Mata Parvati took the form of Maa Skandamata and trained her son Skanda (Lord Kartikeya) for the war. After taking war training from Maa Skandamata Lord Karthikeya slayed Tarakasura and thus saved millions of innocent lives.

How to worship Maa skandamata at home?

On the fifth day of Navratri, first take a bath and wear clean clothes. Now install the idol of Skandamata at the outpost in the temple or at your place of worship. Purify the place with Ganges water. After this, apply Roli (vermilion) and Kumkum (Masculine) to Maa. Offer incense, Champa flowers, Betasha (Hollow sugar bubble candy), Paan, Betel nut, Clove pair, and Green Bangles to Mata. Offer fruits such as bananas and sweets as Bhog to please Devi Skandamata. Now perform Aarti of Mata Skandamata with incense and lamp.  After the Aarti, distribute the Prasad. Lord Kartikeya also gets pleased by the worship of Maa Skandamata. Donating Bananas to Brahmins and needy on the fifth day of Navratri increases intelligence and strength, so one must perform the donations according to their capacity.
